Effectiveness of measures to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change in tourism - COMMITMENT

Project details:
The relationship between climate change and tourism is complex and multidimensional, including both direct and indirect effects. As part of the project, a mixed research approach will be implemented with the basic goal of determining the impact and hazards that climate change has on tourism, and determining the level of resistance of the selected destinations to them. The research will structure the connections between the three variables mentioned, and the appropriate adaptation and mitigation measures that are planned and/or implemented at the level of the destination or tourism entrepreneurs in the destination. The above will be tested in three destinations: coastal (City of Krk), PA destination (NP Plitvice lakes) and continental destination (Sveti Martin na Muri).

Scientific activities:

  • Measure and document the concrete and potential impacts of climate change on destinations in three different geographic categories (coastal, mountainous, continental) - City of Krk, Plitvice Lakes, Sv. Martin na Mura - literature analysis
  • Identify key hazards and vulnerabilities resulting from climate change in each destination - analysis of available secondary data; analyzes of climatological series, in-depth interviews with stakeholders from tourism management
  • Assess the ways in which these hazards affect tourism and destinations - in-depth interviews
  • Analyze different geographic contexts of resilience and vulnerability of destinations - analysis of secondary data sources, field observations, GIS analysis
  • Measure the capacity of destinations to adapt and avoid damage - in-depth interviews with stakeholders responsible for managing infrastructure and natural systems
  • Analyze existing climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in destinations and tourist entities with regard to the regional, geographic and tourist context
  • Assessment of the implementation status of planned and/or implemented adaptation and mitigation measures in destinations - focus group
  • Examine the effectiveness in responding to the detected impacts of hazards and generalized extreme values - models + focus groups
  • Examine the effectiveness of the response with regard to simulations of regional climate models - models + focus groups
  • Examine and document the interrelationships between variables - impacts of climate change, hazards, resilience and adaptation/mitigation measures - delfi Panel
  • Development of guidelines for sustainable management of tourism in destinations subject to climate change. Synthesis
  • Informing and raising awareness - organization of an international scientific meeting
  • Informing and raising awareness - 3 local expert meetings
  • Informing and raising awareness - website and social networks of the project
  • Informing and raising awareness - project logo and project brochure
  • Informing and raising awareness - creating a repository of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures
  • Publication of scientific papers
  • Participation in international scientific conferences

On January 17, 2024 the project COMMITMENT , as a part of scientific projects financed as part of NPOO (NextGeneration fund), started. The topic of the project is "Effectiveness of measures to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change in tourism." The aim of the research is to structure the links between three key variables (impact, hazard and resilience), and to analyze appropriate adaptation and mitigation measures planned or implemented at the destination level or among tourism entrepreneurs in the destination. The research will be conducted in three destinations: a coastal destination (Krk City), a protected nature destination (Plitvička jezera) and a continental destination (St. Martin na Muri).
