Geoheritage and Tourism: An overlooked value with great potential

On 10 December 2025, a panel discussion on GEOHERITAGE was held at the INA building in Zagreb, organized by the Croatian Geological Society. The participants discussed the current state of geoheritage in Croatia, ways of improving its presentation to the public, long-term protection measures, and shared experiences in geoheritage conservation.

Among the panelists was Izidora Marković Vukadin from the Institute for Tourism, who presented tourism approaches and the evaluation of geoheritage and geodiversity, emphasizing the importance of educating the tourism sector about geodiversity, which has so far been largely neglected.

Other panel participants included experts from ministries, museums, national parks, geoparks, and geological institutes, including Irina Žeger Pleše, Tatjana Vlahović, Lana Schmidt, Jurica Sabol, Goran Radonić, Ksenija Protrka, Damir Pocrnić, Aleksandar Mezga, Mladen Garašić, Lidija Galović, Andrea Deklić, and Tajana Ban Ćurić. The panel was moderated by Karmen Fio Firi from the Department of Geology, Faculty of Science.

This event confirmed the importance of cross-sectoral cooperation in the preservation and promotion of geoheritage, with the aim of ensuring protection as well as greater international visibility and inclusion in special-interest tourism products.
