Community Led Tourism as a Sustainable Development Model Examples from Europe and Local Initiatives

Within the framework of the People Powered Tourism project, the Institute for Tourism monitors and analyses various examples of community led tourism in Europe and beyond. Among these are practices from Spain and Moldova, where local families open their farms to visitors during the harvest season.

In such models, visitors actively participate in everyday activities, from early morning grape and fruit harvesting, sorting produce and juice pressing, to shared meals and on farm stays. In this way, the tourism experience becomes part of the real life of the local community rather than a service merely provided to visitors.

Similar concepts are also being explored as part of project activities in Slavonski Brod, where, in cooperation with local stakeholders, opportunities are being examined for the development of tourism products based on local resources, tradition and community involvement.

These examples further highlight the potential of community led tourism as a sustainable model for destination development, particularly in rural areas and smaller communities.
