Invitation to the Book Promotion: Lexicon of Builders, Architects and Civil Engineers from the Czech Lands in Croatia

Lexicon of Builders, Architects and Civil Engineers from the Czech Lands in Croatia, which will take place on October 20, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at the premises of the Zagreb Society of Architects (DAZ). The book is published by Srednja Europa Zagreb and the Institute for Tourism. The author is architect Dr. Jasenka Kranjčević from the Institute for Tourism, with contributions from Leona Matotek, PhD candidate at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, and Dr. Filip Ložek.

The book examines the work of builders, architects, and civil engineers from the Czech lands in Croatia. It is the result of many years of research carried out, revised, and expanded through four scientific projects. Closer social, economic, and political ties between Croatia and the Czech lands intensified during the 19th century, gaining real momentum in the final decades of their shared statehood within the Habsburg and later the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The most fruitful areas of contact were education and culture, which had a rapid and strong influence on literature, fine arts, music, as well as sport and medicine. The research presented in this book confirmed that architecture and construction were not left aside but were, in fact, marked by important connections and influences.

The research also showed that while some Czech architects and builders are relatively well-known, others remain almost completely unknown. It identified which builders, architects, and engineers came from the Czech lands, and what types of buildings they designed or constructed between the early 19th and mid-20th century. By attributing buildings, determining their locations, and recording individuals or their architectural and construction companies, the scope of their contribution to the Central European architectural shaping of Croatia was established. In conclusion, alongside Croatian, Austrian, German, Hungarian, and Italian professionals, Czech builders, architects, and engineers also left a visible and significant mark on the architectural landscape of Croatia.
