Transformative Tourism: From Travel to Personal Transformation through the Literary Heritage of Slavonski Brod

In contemporary approaches to tourism development, increasing emphasis is placed on the concept of transformative tourism—a form of travel that goes beyond traditional sightseeing and encourages personal growth, learning, and a deeper understanding of the places visited.

Transformative tourism is based on experiences that involve active visitor participation, as well as emotional and intellectual engagement, and interaction with the local community. Such experiences leave a lasting impact not only on the destination but also on the visitors themselves, shaping their attitudes, habits, and perceptions.

Within the Interreg project People Powered Tourism, one of the identified potentials for developing such experiences is the literary heritage of Slavonski Brod and its surrounding area. Through interpretive walks, encounters with literary texts in situ, and various forms of creative participation, literature becomes a medium for personal reflection and a deeper connection with local identity.

We are currently in the process of developing these types of tourism products in collaboration with local stakeholders, with the aim of creating experiences that generate long-term value—for both visitors and the local community.
