The Institute for Tourism presented climate change adaptation projects at the international WHO and HZJZ workshop in Zagreb

The Institute for Tourism (IZTZG) participated in the Workshop organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ), held in Zagreb on October 14-15, 2024, where it presented its activities in the field of tourism and climate change. The Institute showcased the international, EU, and national frameworks within which it operates, as well as its project activities and scientific work. Special attention was given to the NaTour4CChange and COMMITMENT projects, which focus on assessing the vulnerability and climate risks of natural tourist areas in the Mediterranean and Croatia, and the implementation of nature-based solutions (NbS). The TSSA project was also presented, which Institute is conducting in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Ministry of Science and Education, with a focus on calculating CO2eq emissions and managing greenhouse gas emissions in the tourism sector.

WHO representative from Bonn, Mr. Vladimir Kendrovski, presented WHO’s activities in the area of climate change and health, emphasizing the importance of applying cross-sectoral solutions to enhance the overall resilience of society. The workshop was also attended by representatives from WHO in Geneva, the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology of the University of Zagreb, the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service, the Institute for Medical Research, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zagreb, and the Osijek University Hospital. All participants agreed that organizing cross-sectoral informative workshops is crucial as a platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences and encouraging closer cooperation on joint projects and activities. In this regard, a representative from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition announced the upcoming release of a new Scheme for Strengthening Applied Research for Climate Change Adaptation Measures, which will open opportunities for project submissions.
